ART EXHIBITION: DINING WITH MADAME SUSIE (Starting 1/5/2019)
Title: Dining with Madame Susie
Artist: Wee Wan
Organizer: Bar Pa Tea
Dining with Madame Susie is an adaptation of rough sketches found in one of Wee’s many notebooks from early in his career. It illustrated stern reminders of certain social faux pas that one should not make while dining with Madame Susie, an imaginary friend inspired by a collection of formidably formal characters with whom he crossed paths.
Drinks should always go on the right. Toasting without eye contact invites bad luck. And unlike soup, dessert is spooned from the outside in.
The series also draws inspiration from the iconic book of etiquette, Tiffany’s Table Manners.
Using Bar Pa Tea as a backdrop, the series explores the evolution of social etiquette in a society that has taken on a more casual and informal tone.
